Alice Hughes has begun her campaign in the Mighty Mini’s Championship with a fantastic opening weekend at Silverstone. Returning to the series after a period away driving a Ford Fiesta in 750 Motor Club Events, Alice displayed great racecraft throughout the weekend to claim a pair of podium finishes. After qualifying on pole position, Hughes backed this up with a second place result in race one, followed by a third place finish in race two, claiming fastest laps in both.
After a short period of winter testing leading up to the opener at Silverstone, Alice was ready for competitive action as the cars took to the track for qualifying. Working with teammate Sarah Moore was going to be crucial to achieving quick lap times and the pair immediately found themselves challenging for pole position. With pole position changing hands repeatedly, a last gasp effort from Alice sealed a stunning front row grid slow as she claimed the fastest time over teammate Moore in an Agouti Motorsport one-two.
Despite securing pole position, Alice knew the races would be tough with the close nature of the Mighty Mini’s field giving way to fantastic racing throughout the field. Although Hughes slipped back a couple of positions on the initial start, she did a great job to stay with the lead pack while keeping her teammate Sarah Moore in sight as both drivers ran inside the top-5. By the halfway mark Alice was running in second with the leading five drivers covered by just over a second as the lead continued to change hands on almost every lap. However, Hughes finished the race in style by setting the fastest lap to finish in second, just half a tenth away from a sensational victory.
Race two of the weekend took place the following day with Alice starting from sixth after the top-7 finishers were reversed to set the grid. A frantic start saw Hughes gain two positions to end the opening lap just over a second off the lead with teammate Sarah Moore looking to join the front group as she gained twelve position after the opening two laps. By lap four Alice was up to second and once again fighting for the lead, making up positions as the leading group continued to battle with one another. After a spell in the lead, Hughes got shuffled back to fourth at the halfway mark and battled hard in the closing stages with Moore and Damien Harrington for the victory. Despite the best efforts of both Agouti Motorsport drivers, Harrington took the win ahead of Moore with Hughes in a strong third, once again claiming fastest lap.
Alice will be hugely encouraged by her pace as well as that of her teammate Sarah Moore, with both drivers being extremely unlucky not to claim a victory. Showing her incredible single lap speed in both qualifying and the races, Hughes will look to carry this through the season and add to her collection of podium finishes. The next round of the Mighty Mini’s Championship takes place at Anglesey where Alice will aim to continue her strong form and collect her first victory of the season.
