Christie Doran has taken her first ever victory in the VAG Trophy with an excellent performance at Snetterton. Doran showed impressive pace during the course of the weekend as she qualified in second before taking fastest lap on route to third in race one. Determined to improve in race two, Christie made a brilliant start and didn’t look back, controlling the race from the front as she took her maiden victory in the series.
Christie was able to benefit from a series of short test sessions on Friday ahead of the weekend’s racing. Despite Snetterton not being a favourite circuit of Doran’s, she made excellent improvements throughout the day, gaining around four seconds on her best lap time. Qualifying began on Saturday morning with Christie targeting a strong starting position for the opening race of the weekend. Doran improved her lap times throughout the 15 minute session to qualify an impressive second, within close range of championship leader Simon Tomlinson.
Starting from second on the grid in race one, Christie was determined to make a good start and aim for another podium finish. Doran dropped to third after the opening lap but with the top-3 Class B drivers running nose-to-tail, anything was possible as the race progressed. Learning from the drivers ahead of her, Christie closed the gap to the lead pair of Tomlinson and Culley who were involved in an epic battle of their own. Just half a second covered the top-3 drivers at the end of lap five but Christie was unable to gain any positions on the final two laps, claiming a solid podium result whilst setting the fastest lap in Class B on the final lap of the race.
Race two began later in the day with Doran starting from third in class and looking to improve on her earlier result. Christie made one of her trademark starts and took the lead of Class B overtaking both Culley and Tomlinson, also passing a number of Class A drivers in the process. With some laps led earlier in the season at Brands Hatch, Doran had the experience to settle into her rhythm and set a number of fast lap times. She extended her lead to almost three seconds by the end of lap four and looked in control by managing the gap back to second placed Culley. Despite a late charge from her experienced competitor, Christie held on to take a memorable victory at Snetterton much to the delight of the hardworking Slidesports team.
After considerable progress during the course of the season, Doran’s first victory comes as a result of great hard work and determination both on and off the track. Christie has now taken a number of fastest laps, in addition to laps led at multiple circuits which will fill her with confidence heading into the final two rounds of the season. With both Oulton Park and Castle Combe being favourites of Christie’s, she will be hoping to replicate her strong form and target further victories to end the season on a high.
