Alexandra Mohnhaupt has enjoyed a superb debut weekend in the British F4 championship with three problem-free races. The young Mexican driver has only been able to carry out limited testing ahead of her first weekend in the highly competitive championship; however she drove brilliantly and made substantial improvements to her lap times throughout the weekend. This will fill Alexandra with confidence heading into Knockhill in two weeks’ time where she hopes to be challenging further towards the front.
With a couple of short tests under her belt for Falcon Motorsport, Mohnhaupt’s main priority during the Friday test session was to acclimatise herself with the challenging Snetterton circuit. The opening session showed a good indication of Alexandra’s speed as she completed a number of competitive lap times before ending the session in 19th. Knowledge was gained over the lunch break with Mohnhaupt gaining a massive two seconds in the afternoon session where she showed particular strength in sector one, concluding the day with the 19th fastest lap time.
Saturday morning brought qualifying and the first competitive British F4 session for Mohnhaupt on the challenging Snetterton circuit. Despite a couple of damp areas on the track, Alexandra set about improving her lap times and set a number of competitive laps during the early stage. After a brief red flag period, five minutes remained giving Mohnhaupt the chance to set two fast times in the latter stages of the session. The Falcon Motorsport driver did just that to secure the 18th fastest time, lining up on the ninth row of the grid for both race one and race three of the weekend.
Race one at Snetterton took place in the afternoon with Mohnhaupt looking for a trouble-free start to her British F4 career. After a solid opening lap, Alexandra was running in 18th when the safety car was deployed. Just one racing lap was completed before another safety car was deployed with Mohnhaupt beginning to mount a challenge on Marinescu ahead of her. Running some of her best laps of the weekend to date in the closing stages, Alexandra finished the opening nine lap contest in a highly respectable 16th position.
The second race of the weekend took place later on Saturday with Mohnhaupt lining up on the eighth row following her strong debut race. Falling to 19th on the opening lap, Alexandra settled into her rhythm and began to improve her lap times in the first couple of laps. On lap six a safety car was brought out which allowed Mohnhaupt to catch up to the field and mount a challenge to the drivers ahead of her. Lap eight saw the racing resume with Mohnhaupt in 18th position but she began to improve her lap times further in the closing stages which saw the young Mexican driver finish in 15th and collect her best result to date.
The third and final race of Mohnhaupt’s debut weekend in British F4 began on Sunday afternoon, once again with dry track conditions. Dropping a place from her grid slot of 18th on the opening lap, Alexandra moved up to 16th on lap two but was subsequently shuffled back to 17th when Fortec Motorsport driver Quinn found a way past. With rival Marinescu in her sights, Alexandra put together her best race of the weekend to date by smashing her personal best lap time and looking ever more comfortable in the Falcon Motorsport machine. This meant that Mohnhaupt finished in 16th, and despite no points being scored, she drove extremely maturely and showed her talents in her debut weekend.
The Falcon Motorsport driver has enjoyed a good first weekend in British F4 and taken to the series well after coming over to the UK to further her racing career. Improvements were clear during the course of the weekend and this should fill Alexandra with confidence heading into the rest of the year. Mohnhaupt will be back behind the wheel in two weeks’ time when the British F4 championship resumes at the Knockhill circuit in Scotland.
