Round 7 of the Junior Saloon Car Championship took place this weekend at Croft. A difficult track for first timers, but as the weekend progressed Shanel’s confidence grew and grew and she put the lows of Brands Hatch behind her. This time we received a kind invite from Jade Racing Developments to join their Clio Cup team for the weekend.
The technical help and assistance of Jade enabled us to experiment with set-up’s that we would not of otherwise been able to do. Only being able to complete the final two practice sessions of Friday the fuel flow issues of Brands arose again, but these were kindly and finally identified and sorted by Jade on Friday evening for us.
In Saturday practice and Qualification we were positioned 23rd each time, which we expected given the power issues we know we have in the engine compared with others. However, Jade knew better.
A change of set up for race day, and an overnight lesson from Jade to Shanel regarding both the track and approach really worked. In the race Shanel put her head down and did everything she was told and was consistently lapping 4 seconds quicker than her best qualification lap, and went from 23rd to 19th and catching others.
Head Down in the second race with Shanel’s confidence high, she was determined to make her presence felt even more, and a brilliant drive including some really good over takes saw Shanel go from 23 to 16th with the speed to catch a few more cars in-front.
But with a few laps to go at the end of the long straight where the cars brake heavily to go into the first corner Shanel’s brakes faded sending Shanel straight on into the gravel.
Although this was our first DNF of the season it was a real confidence boost. The set up and wellbeing support from Jade placed Shanel in the right frame of mind, and showed she has the skill to take the car over its maximum.
Next round is in September in Knockhill in Scotland, but due to distance and school commitments Shanel will not be able to take part in this one.
