Katie Milner has enjoyed her best weekend to date in the Junior Saloon Car Championship taking pair of victories at her home circuit of Croft. Milner was once again in superb form as she topped the timing sheets in every single session before going onto lead all but three laps during the course of the meeting. This has extended Katie’s impressive lead atop the championship standings to over 30 points with just two rounds remaining in the 2016 season.
After producing her best result of last season at Croft, Katie was full of confidence heading back to her home circuit as the driver to beat. She immediately showed her class by topping the Saturday morning free practice session by almost a second, setting a number of consistent lap times which were unable to be matched by her competitors. This speed translated into qualifying later in the afternoon where Katie took pole position for both races, despite her fastest lap being taken away for a track limits infringement. Milner’s four fastest lap times set in qualifying would’ve all been quick enough to guarantee her a front row starting position, underlying her excellent pace at the Yorkshire track.
The first race of the weekend began on Sunday with Katie aiming to take a straight forward lights-to-flag victory. Milner made a fantastic start and held the lead after the opening lap and began to build a sizeable lead over her nearest championship challenger George Sutton in second position. By the end of lap three, Katie’s advantage was almost four seconds as she set the fastest lap of the race whilst Ollie Willmott took second away from Sutton. This led to an exceptional display of driving from Katie as she looked in control out front, setting her next five lap times all within a quarter of a second of each other. Despite a brilliant showing from Willmott in second, Milner took her fifth victory of the season in fine fashion to the delight of her friends and family who had made the short trip to Croft to support her.
Race two of the weekend began shortly after with the track dry after a short shower earlier in the afternoon. Once again starting from pole position, Katie was unable to replicate her start of race one and dropped to third by the end of the first lap. Undeterred by her position, Milner set about chasing the lead pairing and passed teammate Willmott on lap two before closing the gap to leader Sutton. On lap four Katie took the lead and didn’t look back, setting her fastest lap of the weekend on the following lap as she tried to open up a gap on new second place driver Willmott. However, Ollie didn’t let Katie get away and she was kept on her toes in the final stages of the race with the lead pairing opening up a commanding lead over the rest of the field. Milner held to claim victory in the 10 lap race to take her first double victory of the season and assert herself as the Junior Saloon Car Championship point’s leader.
It was another commanding performance from Katie who proved she has both the one-lap pace and overtaking prowess in one of the most competitive junior series in the UK. Milner’s consistency in recent meetings has been highly admirable and is at the centre of successes during the course of the season. Katie has now finished in the top-2 position in the last eight races, with five wins coming during that period to increase her lead in the championship over second placed Sutton to over 30 points with just two rounds of the season remaining. The Junior Saloon Car Championship now takes a short break before returning to Knockhill in Scotland for the penultimate round at the beginning of September.
Katie would like to thank Nimbus Motorsport, Richardson Transport, Torco, Merlin International Trading, Autocool Radiators and Myprotein for all their continued support.
