Double podium for Doran at Brands Hatch

Christie Doran has enjoyed another successful weekend in the VAG Trophy after taking a pair of podium finishes on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. Having only driven the Indy layout of Brands Hatch before this weekend, Doran was excited to tackle the extended layout and immediately impressed by qualifying second in Class B. Christie’s pace was taken forward into both races where she collected two third place results, an impressive achievement by Doran and the Slidesports team.

Christie was given the chance to test on Friday in preparation for the weekend where she gained familiarisation with the car after a lengthy break. Although only being able to drive on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, Doran had a successful test and learnt a lot to take forward into the weekend. Qualifying was held on Saturday morning with Christie experiencing the thrilling Grand Prix layout for the first time in her career. After just a handful of laps Doran was on the pace and was sitting second in Class B. As the times began to tumble, Christie found herself in third but was able to post an excellent lap time late on in the session to elevate her back to second, just a second away from experienced pole-sitter Simon Tomlinson.

Race one of the weekend began early in the afternoon with Christie starting at the front of Class B after a penalty was applied to polesitter Tomlinson. Doran made a good start and was in second place after the first lap with Barrie Culley taking the class lead. At the end of lap two, Christie slipped to third after Tomlinson made his way through but the Slidesports driver was determined to stay in touch with the lead pairing. Setting her fastest lap of the weekend on lap four, Doran was hoping a battle for the class lead would emerge to help her to get involved as the raced progressed. With tough conditions for all the drivers, Christie slipped back slightly in the closing stages but had comfortably secured a great podium finish in her first outing on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

With a quick turnaround in between races, Christie was determined to make her way forward and fight for a victory in race two. Doran made a good start and held third position after the opening two laps before a red flag was brought out to bring the race to a halt. When the racing resumed, Christie once again kept hold of a podium position and was ready to close in on the two Class B leaders. Unfortunately just three full laps were completed before a second red flag stopped the race with the results determined from the running order after two laps of the restarted race. This meant Christie finished in third but she was still satisfied with her second podium finish of the day in challenging conditions at Brands Hatch.

Doran’s great run of form in recent events will give her further confidence heading into the final three meetings of the season. Christie’s qualifying improvements in particular have been impressive and go to show how much she has developed as a driver in her second full-season in the VAG Trophy. Running closer to the lead pack with each and every race, Doran knows her first win is within touching distance and she’ll be targeting further silverware at the next round of the championship at Snetterton in two weeks’ time.
